Like many people, you have likely battled the flu at some point in your life. This virus can last anywhere from a day to several days. It also has varying levels of severity and symptoms. But there is not one single type of this virus. You should be aware of what these types look like so that you know what you are up against. Your health care provider can help you control and overcome this sickness.
Avoiding the flu
It may sometimes seem inevitable that a person will catch the flu. This virus is so common that it can run its course in family settings as well as in workplaces and other close groups. Because it is contagious, it is not difficult to pass around the virus from person to person. However, there are ways people can reduce their risk of catching it.
One of the most effective ways to prevent this virus is handwashing. This practice should occur frequently, especially after using the restroom. Washing with soap for at least 30 seconds can kill the virus and keep a person from spreading it through contact. Also, covering the mouth when coughing and the mouth and nose when sneezing will help. Staying away from people who are sick is another wise practice. People can get a flu vaccine at an urgent care clinic every year as well.
Influenza A
This is one of two strains that cause yearly flu viruses. It is most rampant during the winter months. This virus can cause large outbreaks and pandemics. It is characterized by coughing, runny or stuffy nose, and sneezing.
An individual may also get a fever, headache, body aches, or chills. Untreated, this virus can lead to other sicknesses. These include ear infections, diarrhea, nausea, and pneumonia. The illness can go away on its own. However, treatment from a physician may be necessary.
Influenza B
Type B influenza is similar to type A. It is more common and is responsible for seasonal outbreaks. Humans are the natural host for this flu virus. This virus can mutate slowly. Furthermore, it will take longer for this virus to change its genetic makeup. This puts it at a lower risk of spreading to large numbers.
Influenza C and D
Unlike viruses A and B, the C version of the flu will not cause pandemics and other widespread cases. A person can get influenza C, but the symptoms are milder. The individual typically recovers quickly and will have few disruptions to their daily routine. Influenza D will not affect humans. Instead, this virus infects cattle. It can also spread to swine.
Protect yourself against these viruses
Getting the flu can be a difficult experience. Though sometimes, the virus can be mild, it can also cause severe complications. People can die from this illness. Be aware of the different types and how these can affect you and your family. Be vigilant and take the necessary steps to avoid and treat this sickness during this upcoming season.
